El Arosa (The Bride/Puppet/Doll)

An experimental video project using sculptural costumes, and touching upon themes of womanhood.

"As an artist who has a history in puppetry, I'm currently interested in approaching this art form in a more experimental way. Sourcing for materials in markets and amongst common goods (loofah, hair types), I found myself using mundane Egyptian products, loosely relating to domesticity. I worked on this project as I was preparing my own wedding, and questioning the meaning of marriage and its role in a patriarchal society, especially in Egypt where a woman's main goal in life is to get married. From this starting point, the piece organically evolved into this video piece."
