You of me
Inge Meijer completed a BA in Visual Arts at The Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Arnhem (NL) 2012. The same year she was the winner of both the Hendrik Valk Prize, Museum of Modern Art Arnhem (NL) and the Young Art Korte Film Award (NL). Her work is a synergy of experimental film, documentary and visual art. Recently she finished a residence at Schloss Ringenberg, Hamminkeln (D) and was awarded the Mondriaan Fund Amsterdam. She has exhibited at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin (2014), the Eye Film Instituut, Amsterdam (2013), the Pera Museum Istanbul (2012), T.E.N.T Rotterdam (2012) and the Bonnefantenmuseum (NL, 2011).
In You of Me, it is the children’s inescapable frontality as they recite their criteria for a partner in an absurd yet concentrated way. As always, this search will disappoint because the prospective partner’s criteria is imagined only through one’s self: the desired results—someone new and unknown—have already been defined in the searcher’s imagination. That this bizarre and auto-suggestive adult desire comes from the mouths of children potentializes the futility of the request—a paradoxical longing, formulated from a memory recalling an event that never happened.
